Freelance documentation writing

Documentation so good you'll actually want to read it.

Making the complex comprehensible

Documentation is a vital part of any API, software, or product lifecycle. My freelance documentation writing services ensure that, however fast your engineers are moving, your documentation is accurate, up-to-date, and – best of all – highly readable.

The process

How it works

The first step in any project is for you to tell me what you want to change about your existing documentation. Do you need new content? Are we  tweaking old content? Are we restructuring the existing documentation entirely?

After that, I’ll analyse your existing documenation to get to know your product, software or API better. Once that’s done, we’ll get together with your engineers and discuss the project – after all, we’ll need to stay in touch as the project develops.

Once everyone is happy with the plan, I’ll start writing. We’ll meet regularly to review the content and ensure everything is on track.

Once the content is approved, you can either upload it yourself, or I can – whatever works for you.

FAQ

Yes! I can write documentation for APIs, SDKs, hardware and software products. Check out my portfolio for examples of my technical writing.

While I don’t actively code, I can read and understand Python and C++ well enough to suggest code snippets in your documentation.

As an experienced freelance documentation writer, I am able to very quickly get up to speed on whatever programming language your product is written in.

Obviously, documentation isn’t static. As you add new features and make changes, the documentation will grow.

I aim to match you company’s style and tone of voice so that it’s easy for you to continue to update your documentation by yourself, if you want to.

Alternatively, we can look at a recurring project where I update your documentation for you as changes are made, or at regular intervals – whatever works best for you.

How long is a piece of string? The length of the project will vary greatly depending on the size of the documentation and the amount of work that it needs.

For every project I provide an estimate of how long I think it will take to complete the work. But however long it takes, you can count on my enthusiasm, dilligence, and good cheer!

I tend to quote for work on a project basis. If you want to know rough costs, all you need to do is get in touch

I can tell you that for the documentation project in my portfolio (which was in lots of places a full rewrite from the ground up) I charged around £3,700.

I am familiar with major documentation applications including Sphinx and Read the Docs.

During the writing phase I tend to work in Microsoft Word. Once copy is approved, I am very happy to upload it into your chosen documentation application, making the process even more hands-off for you.

Happy documentation writing clients

“Jon was a pleasure to work with on the GAD SDK project, and produced documentation which was far clearer than what we had originally started with.”
